WHY APOLOGETICS?
Why Apologetics? Notes by Laurence Gonzaga
1. Be ready to give reason and defense of my faith.
1 Peter 3:14-16

14 But even if you should suffer for righteousness' sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled, 15 but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, 16 having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame.
2. Someone can't just randomly understand all the Scriptures without an authoritative teacher, who knows the truth, and sent directly or indirectly (apostello) by God.
Acts 8:30-31

30 So Philip ran to him and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet and asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?” 31 And he said, “How can I, unless someone guides me?” And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.
3. There are some who don't understand the scriptures and so, being untaught, or unstable, create or promote false teachings to their own destruction, and by extension, others' destruction.
2 Peter 3:15-16

15 And count the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you according to the wisdom given him, 16 as he does in all his letters when he speaks in them of these matters. There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures.
4. Some look for teachers who teach what they want to hear or what they already believe, rather than finding the true teachers, who teach with the authority of Christ, and listen to WHATEVER they teach, and promote those same teachings, always.
2 Timothy 4:1-5

4 I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: 2 preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. 3 For the time is coming when people will not endure sound[a] teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, 4 and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. 5 As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.
5. If you want to receive Jesus, you need to receive the one He sends; who does He send? By what authority are they sent?
John 13:19-20

19 I am telling you this now, before it takes place, that when it does take place you may believe that I am he. 20 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever receives the one I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.”
6. Jesus established a Church, upon the Rock, Peter, the first Catholic pope, who governs and nourishes the flock that has been entrusted to him; Jesus tells Peter to "bosque" and "poimaine" the sheep, which means to juridically govern and spiritually nourish.
Matthew 16:17-19

For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. 18 And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock[a] I will build my church, and the gates of hell[b] shall not prevail against it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed[c] in heaven.”

7. The other apostles, and now the successors of the apostles, the bishops, also have the power to bind and loose as Peter does.
Matthew 18:15-20

If Your Brother Sins Against You
15 “If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother. 16 But if he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, that every charge may be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses. 17 If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector. 18 Truly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed[a] in heaven. 19 Again I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. 20 For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.”
8. The Church, and its members, are called top spread the Gospel everywhere, and to baptize them in the faith.

And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
